The State of the Music Industry in 2025: Combating Fake Releases and Protecting Artists

Combating Fake Releases and Protecting Artists

In 2025, the music industry continues to thrive. However, artists still grapple with persistent challenges. One such issue is the problem of fake releases, which continues to plague musicians, despite the measures taken to combat it.

The Problem of Fake Releases

Fake releases involve the unauthorized upload of music, often under the guise of legitimate content, on streaming platforms. These fraudulent activities can lead to revenue loss, confusion among fans, and damage to an artist’s reputation. An example of this occurred with the artist Effusion in 2025, when a fake-release “demo” invaded their profile on Deezer.

“We just literally learned of this problem today, February 3, 2025. A big heartfelt gratitude to the fan who brought this to our attention. Investigation is on the way. We will update you with more details as they become available.” —Effusion

Why Issues Persist Despite Measures

Despite the measures by streaming platforms like Spotify and Deezer using sophisticated algorithms to detect unusual streaming patterns and flag potential fake streams, incidents like “demo” fake release still occur due to several factors:

Distribution Company: Allowing some fake releases to slip through the cracks, maybe for monetary reasons, or maybe monitoring and verifying content is challenging.

Evolving Tactics: Fraudsters continuously find new ways to bypass detection algorithms and exploit system vulnerabilities.

Human Error: Mistakes can happen, and not all fake releases are caught immediately, even with advanced technology.

While significant strides have been made to combat fake releases in the music industry, challenges persist due to evolving tactics, and human error. Continuous improvement and vigilance are essential to protect artists and maintain the integrity of the music industry.

I hope Congress can address the issues plaguing music distribution. Distributors, who play a crucial role in this system, often seem indifferent to the artists’ plight. This has turned into a monopoly, and they are significantly contributing to the fake artist problem in the industry. As the gatekeepers to streaming platforms, they must be held accountable for allowing fake artists to infiltrate these services.

I’ve been a long-time fan of Effusion’s music since their debut album, Blue Illusions. Over the years, they’ve experimented with various musical styles, which have inspired me to explore different genres as well. Much love!
